DPS (Damage Per Second) measures average damage output over time. It accounts for attack speed, cooldowns, and all damage sources to give one comparable number.

Raw damage is per-hit. DPS factors in how fast you attack. A 100 damage attack at 2 attacks/sec = 200 DPS, while 300 damage at 0.5 attacks/sec = 150 DPS.

DPS matters for sustained fights (bosses, DPS checks). Burst damage matters for quick kills (PvP, trash mobs) where fights end before sustained DPS kicks in.

Add skill damage ÷ cooldown to auto-attack DPS. A 1500 damage skill on 8-second cooldown adds 187.5 DPS (1500÷8). Sum all skills and auto-attacks for total.

Theoretical DPS assumes 100% uptime. Effective DPS accounts for movement, dodging, and downtime. Multiply theoretical by uptime percentage (usually 70-90% in real scenarios).

Check your current ratio. If speed is low, increasing it helps more due to more frequent skill casts and crits. If already fast, damage per hit gives better returns. Balance is usually optimal.

CDR increases skill cast frequency. 20% CDR on an 8-second skill = 6.4 seconds = 25% more casts. For skill-heavy builds, CDR can boost DPS by 15-30%.

Single-target is against one enemy. AoE (Area of Effect) hits multiple targets. AoE skills multiply damage by target count. For 3 enemies, a 200 DPS AoE skill = 600 effective DPS.

Use damage meter addons or training dummies. Fight for 2-5 minutes, divide total damage by time. Compare to calculator estimates to verify your rotation and identify improvement areas.

Varies by game and role. In MMOs, casual content needs 5-10k DPS, raid DPS 15-30k+, top players 50k+. Check your game's community resources for current tier benchmarks.
