An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9). It describes the shape of an image, video, or screen without regard to its actual size.

Divide both width and height by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 1920×1080 pixels: GCD is 120, so 1920÷120 = 16 and 1080÷120 = 9, giving you 16:9 aspect ratio.

16:9 (widescreen video, HD/4K), 4:3 (traditional TV/monitors), 1:1 (square for Instagram), 9:16 (vertical video for mobile), 21:9 (ultrawide monitors), 3:2 (photography), and 16:10 (computer displays).

If you know the aspect ratio and one dimension: for width, multiply height by (ratio width ÷ ratio height). For height, multiply width by (ratio height ÷ ratio width). Example: 16:9 ratio with 1920px width means height = 1920 × (9÷16) = 1080px.

16:9 (1.78:1) is wider and used for video/TV content. 16:10 (1.6:1) is slightly taller, common in computer monitors and laptops, providing more vertical space for productivity while maintaining widescreen format.

Preserving aspect ratio prevents distortion and stretching. Changing dimensions without maintaining the ratio makes subjects appear squashed or elongated, which looks unprofessional and can make text unreadable.

Decimal ratios are already simplified. 1.85:1 means the width is 1.85 times the height. To find dimensions, multiply your desired height by 1.85 for width. For example, 1080px height × 1.85 = 1998px width.

4K (3840×2160) has a 16:9 aspect ratio, same as HD (1920×1080). The '4K' refers to horizontal resolution (~4000 pixels), but the shape remains widescreen. DCI 4K (4096×2160) is slightly wider at 1.9:1.
