DPI (Dots Per Inch) refers to printer output resolution, while PPI (Pixels Per Inch) refers to digital image resolution. In practice, they're often used interchangeably. Both measure how many dots or pixels fit in one linear inch, determining image sharpness and print quality.

Use 300 DPI for high-quality prints, which is the standard for professional photo printing. 150-200 DPI works for draft prints or large posters viewed from a distance. 600 DPI or higher is used for fine art prints or documents requiring extreme detail.

72 DPI is a historical reference to early Mac screen resolution, but modern displays vary widely (96-400+ PPI). For web images, pixel dimensions matter more than DPI since screens display images at native pixel size regardless of embedded DPI metadata.

Divide pixel dimensions by DPI. For example, a 3000×2000 pixel image at 300 DPI prints at 10×6.67 inches (3000÷300 = 10). Higher DPI produces smaller prints with better quality, lower DPI produces larger prints with reduced sharpness.

Lower DPI results in visible pixelation and reduced sharpness. A 150 DPI print may look acceptable for posters viewed from a distance, but close inspection will show jagged edges. Below 100 DPI, quality degradation becomes obvious even at normal viewing distances.

Increasing DPI metadata doesn't add detail to an image. If you have a 1000×1000 pixel image, it contains the same information whether set to 100 DPI or 300 DPI. To truly improve resolution, you'd need to capture a new image with more pixels or use AI upscaling.

Multiply print dimensions by DPI: 8×300 = 2400 pixels wide, 10×300 = 3000 pixels tall. You need a 2400×3000 pixel image (7.2 megapixels) for a high-quality 8×10 print. Always capture more pixels than needed to allow for cropping.

DPI metadata is mostly irrelevant for screen display. Monitors show images at actual pixel dimensions regardless of embedded DPI. A 1920×1080 image fills the same screen space whether it's tagged as 72 DPI or 300 DPI. DPI only matters when preparing images for print.

Changing DPI without resampling adjusts print size but keeps pixel count the same. Resampling changes the actual pixel dimensions, adding or removing image data. This calculator shows how DPI affects print size without resampling the image.

300 DPI is the threshold where the human eye can no longer distinguish individual dots at normal viewing distance (10-12 inches). This ensures sharp, professional-quality prints. Lower DPI may be acceptable for large-format prints viewed from farther away.
