GIS & Geographic Converters (GeoJSON, KML, GPX)

Geographic Data Format Conversion

Geographic data comes in many formats, each optimized for different use cases. Converting between formats enables interoperability between mapping applications, GPS devices, and GIS software.

GeoJSON

GeoJSON is the modern standard for geographic data on the web. Based on JSON, it's easy to parse in JavaScript and is widely supported by mapping libraries like Leaflet, Mapbox, and Google Maps. GeoJSON supports points, lines, polygons, and feature collections with properties.

KML (Keyhole Markup Language)

KML is Google Earth's native format, now an OGC standard. It's XML-based and supports advanced styling, 3D visualization, and time-based animations. KML is ideal for sharing geographic data that needs rich visual presentation.

GPX (GPS Exchange Format)

GPX is the standard format for GPS data. It stores waypoints, routes, and tracks from GPS devices. Athletes and outdoor enthusiasts use GPX to record and share routes for hiking, cycling, and other activities.

Shapefile

Shapefile is Esri's legacy format, still widely used in professional GIS. It's actually a collection of files (.shp, .dbf, .shx) that together describe geometries and attributes. While dated, Shapefiles remain the common denominator for GIS data exchange.
