Character Encoding Explained
Character encoding determines how text characters are stored as bytes. ASCII covers basic English; Unicode (UTF-8) covers all languages; legacy encodings like GBK (Chinese), Shift-JIS (Japanese), and ISO-8859 (European) were developed before Unicode was universal. When a file is read with the wrong encoding, characters appear garbled — this is called mojibake.
Common Legacy Encodings
GBK / GB2312 / GB18030 are Chinese encodings used extensively in mainland China. GBK supports 21,003 Chinese characters. GB18030 is the current national standard.
Shift-JIS / EUC-JP are Japanese encodings used in legacy software and websites. Many Japanese files still use Shift-JIS rather than UTF-8.
